Calculate your net worth and keep it in view
Your net worth is everything you own minus what you owe. Working it out regularly shows whether your wealth is growing – independent of day-to-day price swings.
The formula
Net worth = accounts and cash + investments + other assets − outstanding loans and debts.
What to include
- Checking account, savings account and cash
- Stocks, ETFs and crypto at their current price
- Assets without a market price, such as gold, entered by hand at their value
- As deductions: the remaining balance of loans – including money you owe to family or friends
Why check it regularly?
Once a month is enough. You see the trend, the effect of your savings plans and how quickly debts shrink. That makes it easier to stay on course – especially with market ups and downs.
